Why Boon?
Boon Candle Company was launched by me, Emma Ellis (mum of 2, wife of 1!) in December 2018.
I am often asked why the name Boon? The dictionary definition of boon is “something helpful and beneficial.” Making candles has been a real boon for me since the summer of 2017. Here’s the reason why…
I am somebody who has suffered with anxiety on and off for most of my life. In 2017 severe anxiety crept in again for no apparent reason (which is often the case). I started making candles as a way of focusing and challenging my mind. I have always loved the mindful nature of burning candles. Watching them flicker and smelling the beautiful fragrance is a great way of calming the mind.
I soon realised that to make the ‘perfect’ candle takes a huge amount of research and testing. There are many variables that can affect the nature of how a candle burns. Over the period of 18 months I took over the kitchen testing various waxes, wicks, fragrance blends, temperatures and containers. Every time a candle didn’t pass the test a variable had to be changed. I had enough ‘failed’ candles to open a high street shop!
Roll forward 18 months and in my newly built candle making studio in the garage I had created beautiful wooden wick candles that I was more than excited to share. I knew that my candles would be a ‘boon’ to those who burned them.
We all need to take care of our wellbeing and mental health. Through Boon Candle Company I wanted to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health and get people talking. I decided to donate 50p from the sale of each candle to mental health charities.
The creation of Boon Candle Company has certainly helped with my wellbeing as I love doing things to help others.
The personalised lids that I have created give people the chance to choose words to show how much they are loved and give them positive affirmations to think about whilst they enjoy their boon candle.
For whatever reason you came across my Boon Candle Company, I hope that it is as much of a ‘boon’ to you as it has been to me.
